AI Citation Benchmark 2026: Who Gets Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews
We ran 500 buyer-intent prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude in Q2 2026. This benchmark reports which content types get cited most, how often big brands beat niche sites, and the average number of sources each engine cites per answer.

Methodology
500 buyer-intent prompts across 25 B2B and B2C categories, run in April-June 2026. Each prompt was executed once per engine (ChatGPT-4o, Perplexity Sonar Pro, Google AI Overviews, Claude 3.5 Sonnet) from a US IP with a clean session. Citations were counted only when the engine attributed a source URL. Sponsored placements were excluded.

It's possible but harder than on Perplexity. Sites with domain authority under 40 captured only 8% of ChatGPT citations in our study, versus 22% on Perplexity. If you're a niche site, target Perplexity first.
