Google AI Overviews now cite an average of 2.4 sources, down from 4.1

A July 2026 audit of 1,000 AI Overview queries shows Google is collapsing citations to fewer, higher-authority domains.

Google's AI Overviews have quietly reduced the number of cited sources per answer from 4.1 (Jan 2026) to 2.4 (July 2026). The cut disproportionately hit mid-tier publishers; sites with strong Organization + Person schema and a documented author entity graph retained citation share.

The change reinforces a pattern we flagged in our own AI Citation Benchmark: entity clarity — a real, sameAs-linked author with a persistent URL — now outweighs raw domain authority for AI Overview inclusion.

What to do about it

Prioritise author pages with sameAs links to LinkedIn, X, and Wikipedia over chasing more backlinks. AI Overviews reward disambiguated entities.
